comment section. I literally have a browser extension to hide them, but sometimes…I am weak. Yesterday, an anti-Zionist Jewish creator was critiquing Ben Shapiro for dismissing Matt Bernstein and Hannah Einbinder as "not Jewish enough" to have an opinion on Israel or whatever, since they're both seemingly secular anti-Zionist Jews. The YouTuber then said, "Judaism is first and foremost an ethnicity," i.e., Matt and Hannah are just as Jewish as Ben and can speak with equal authority despite not being religiously observant.
I commented that it's more inclusive to call Judaism an ethnoreligion because tossing the religious roots out also throws converts under the bus, because we obviously can't share the same genes. Then some pedantic asshole came in like, "Ethnicity doesn't have anything to do with genes, anyway."
…hmm, no. If you want to be really accurate about it, it isn't that ethnicity has nothing to do with genes; it's that genes are but one possible component of ethnicity. Some ethnic groups do have a high degree of genetic similarity due to strict endogamy. Not all ethnic groups have a genetic component, but there's a reason certain ethnicities like Ashkenazim are at higher risk for certain genetic disorders. It's the genes, buddy…they're shared.
Another lesson to myself to just not comment, because someone will inevitably come along who absolutely fully understands the meaning of my message yet still feels the need to issue a correction to make themselves feel smarter. Actually, the purpose of language is to be understood, and you clearly understood my original message, so getting didactic about verbiage is just weird and rude and ultimately distracts from the point I was trying to make.
